Rex Ashlock (1918 – 1999) was an American Abstract Expressionist painter. Born in 1918, Ashlock's artistic journey began with a traditional education at the University of Washington in Seattle. However, driven by his passion for painting, he left after his sophomore year to pursue his artistic aspirations.Ashlock honed his skills at The California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, where he encountered influential figures like David Park, whose teachings deeply impacted his artistic perspective. Despite facing financial challenges throughout his life, Ashlock remained dedicated to his craft, often painting scenes around the Bay Area in watercolor en plein air. In 1957, Ashlock moved to New York City, immersing himself in the vibrant art scene. He forged friendships with prominent abstract artists like Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning. A Chinese calligrapher considered him to be the purest form of an artist and hence his honorable Chinese name, “I chen bunán,” Meaning “One small grain of sand, unstained.”
